About Meals On Wheels Delaware

Meals On Wheels Delaware is part of a nationwide program that provides hot, nutritious meals to homebound senior citizens. Last year, Meals On Wheels Delaware agencies and their volunteers delivered more than 600,000 hot meals—and as many warm smiles—to seniors across the state.  For most of our recipients, this service is a lifeline and the key to ongoing independence.

Each weekday in Delaware, over 4,300 seniors depend on us. For the 61% of homebound seniors who live alone, this outside contact can be as important as the daily meal.

In fiscal year 2004, the statewide Meals on Wheels program provided over 620,000 meals for the homebound elderly. Over 1,900 corporate, civic and community volunteers delivered meals every weekday. Workers at 56 companies as well as over 100 churches and civic groups volunteered their lunch hours to help.

Still, there is much to be done. According to the 2000 census, over 134,000 or 17% of Delaware's population is 60 or above.  Our fastest growing segment, by 2005 this group will grow by another 14% to an estimated 153,000. Furthermore, 91% of homebound seniors are unable to cook, shop, or prepare a hot meal. At Meals On Wheels Delaware, it is our mission to develop private-sector funding and volunteer resources to assist local Meals on Wheels programs, working toward the day when no eligible senior goes without a hot meal.

We could use your help!  You can make a difference, one hot meal at a time.  Please take a moment to learn more about volunteer opportunities across the state, to make a donation or to attend one of our unique and celebrated culinary events.
